Fun Monday - sounds

"Pleasure it is to hear iwis, the birdís sing.
The deer in the dale, the sheep in the vale, the corn springing.
God's purveyance for sustenance, it is for man, it is for man.
Then we always to Him give praise, and thank Him then."
A Cornish poem used by Benjamin Britten in his 'Ceremony of Carols'
and an unusual beginning to a Fun Monday post towards the end of January!
Well, it's Fun Monday and the question is...
What is the most beautiful sound in the whole world?
Once you’ve told us that, give us the flip side, too: What is the sound you dislike the most?
So prosaically, I'm going to choose birdsong with the deep-throated purr
of a contented moggy-tiger sitting on your lap a close second.
And the flip side has to be our younger dog...
Dogs have a far wider range of sounds than the usual 'woof-woof'.
When the lad really wants to draw our attention, he has a
higher pitched bark that literally sets the radiators resounding.

I know that high-pitched bark - makes me want to tape their mouths shut. It really does grate on the nerves.

Flipside - I LOVE purring! I have a large cat that sleeps with me and her purring can put me to sleep.

You're right, Joan. You have the two opposites--birda and cats. Just need to keep them separate to keep the symphony going! I'm also aware of the quality of bark that different breeds have. Had one dogs, a border collie, that sounded like a spoiled, nagging child when excited.

Gosh, that takes me back. I sang The Festival of Carols when I was in the girl's choir at school, many, many moons ago!

Nicest sound: That's hard. I could be the oboe in Scene from Swan Lake, it could be my grandson laughing, it could be the splash of waves on the beach.
The worst sound - that's easier, it's the sound - any sound - I needed to hear and didn't because of my hearing loss! :0)

I don't own a dog and do hate being awakened by the neighbor one barking. I will agree on the song of a bird--it was one of my favs.

I love to hear the birds sing in the spring...what a great way to start your morning. Yapping dogs are so irritating to me also.

Wonderful Poem Joany. I do rather like birdsong as well. You must have quite a dog to have such a high-pitched bark.

Isn't it amazing how we communicate with our pets. We can tell what it is they need simply by their wimper, or bark or motion.

I had a german shepherd for a while and I was always surprised at how high pitched his bark was for such a large dog!

Great post.

Thank you all for visiting and for your kind comments. Z-dog's usual bark is deep; only when he's in attention seeking mode do we occasionally hear the resounding bark. Or if I use my hair-dryer.
